How the matched betting calculator works
Matched betting pairs a back bet at a bookmaker with a lay bet on the same selection at a betting exchange. The calculator finds the lay stake that makes both outcomes as close to equal as possible, after the exchange's commission.
- Pick the bet type. Qualifying for a cash bet, SNR or SR for a free bet, or Refund when a losing bet is refunded as a free bet.
- Enter the back stake and odds from the bookmaker. Odds are decimal; use the converter for fractional odds such as 5/2.
- Enter the lay odds and commission from the exchange. Check your exchange's current commission rate.
- Place the suggested lay stake and check you have enough balance for the liability.
Worked examples
All examples use a £10 stake, back odds of 3.0, lay odds of 3.1 and 2% commission.

Calculator questions
How is the lay stake calculated for a qualifying bet?
Lay stake = (back stake × back odds) ÷ (lay odds − commission), where commission is a decimal such as 0.02 for 2%. For a £10 back bet at 3.0, laid at 3.1 with 2% commission, the lay stake is £9.74 and the result is −£0.45 whichever side wins.
How is the lay stake calculated for an SNR free bet?
For a stake-not-returned free bet, lay stake = (free bet × (back odds − 1)) ÷ (lay odds − commission). A £10 SNR free bet at 3.0, laid at 3.1 with 2% commission, needs a £6.49 lay and returns about £6.36 to £6.37.
What does liability mean in matched betting?
Liability is the amount the exchange can take from you if your lay bet loses, which happens when the back bet wins. It equals lay stake × (lay odds − 1), and you need that much in your exchange account to place the lay.
What are underlay and overlay?
Underlaying uses a smaller lay stake so more of the profit lands if the back bet wins; overlaying uses a larger lay so more lands if the lay wins. They are useful for refund offers and some promotions, but they favour one outcome, so compare both results before betting.
